What Can I Eat on Keto? A Dose-Not-Ban Food List
You can eat any food on keto as long as your total digestible carbs for the day stay low enough to keep you in ketosis; the useful question is not "is this keto?" but "how much carb is in the portion on your plate?"

Why there is no banned list
A ketogenic diet is defined by its result, raised blood ketones, not by a list of foods. See Chapter 1. That means a food is only a problem in the amount that pushes your daily carbs too high.
Two ideas make this practical:
- Dose. A teaspoon of ketchup and a cup of ketchup are very different carb loads.
- Glycemic load. How much a food raises blood sugar depends on both how fast its carbs are absorbed (glycemic index) and how many digestible carbs you eat. Glycemic load multiplies the two. See Glycemic Index vs Glycemic Load.
KetoDick on this: he says "there are no banned foods" and that "the dose makes the poison" (from the videos; video ffwBPoKxlDI; video UygKGoP_BtA). He gives glycemic load as index × digestible carbs ÷ 100, and says some foods, such as regular Coca-Cola, fit only at an "eyedropper" dose (video UygKGoP_BtA). He is critical of "keto police" food rules from books and gurus (video ffwBPoKxlDI).
The food groups by carb dose
The tiers below sort foods by how easily they fit a low daily carb limit at a normal serving. Check labels or a food database for exact numbers, because carb counts vary by brand and portion.
| Tier | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Eat freely | Very few digestible carbs per normal serving | Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, butter, oils, leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, arugula, kale) |
| Eat normally, count them | Some carbs, but plenty of fibre and room at normal portions | Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, avocado, peppers, tomatoes, hard cheese |
| Measure carefully | Carbs add up fast at a handful or a pour | Nuts and seeds, cream, soft cheeses, berries, onions |
| Small doses only | A normal serving uses most or all of a day's carbs | Fruit other than berries, carrots, beans and lentils, milk |
| Rarely, if at all | Almost impossible to fit at a normal serving | Potatoes, corn, rice, bread, pasta, cereal, regular soda, juice, sweets |
Nothing in the bottom row will make ketosis impossible in a bite. It simply crowds out everything else in a small budget.
KetoDick on this: he names leafy greens as the best vegetables, says peppers and tomatoes are fine, and calls carrots, potatoes and corn the problems (video UygKGoP_BtA). He says fruit in small amounts is fine and that the starchy roots are the limited ones (video 1JbK1_ClDmY). See Can You Eat Fruit on Keto?.
Vegetables: leafy greens stay
A common mistake is cutting vegetables to save carbs. Most non-starchy vegetables carry a lot of fibre and few digestible carbs, and they supply vitamins, minerals and potassium that a low-carb diet can otherwise lack.
Good everyday choices:
- spinach, lettuce, arugula, kale
- broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
- green beans, mushrooms
- peppers, tomatoes (in normal amounts)
- avocado
KetoDick on this: he says almost all your carbs should come from vegetables, for fibre, which he calls the most overlooked part of the diet (video UygKGoP_BtA). He objects to articles saying keto "strictly caps" vegetables, and describes a "stall breaker" day with 7 cups of broccoli (video 1JbK1_ClDmY). See Fiber and Can You Eat Vegetables on Keto?.
Protein foods
Meat, poultry, fish, seafood and eggs have almost no carbs. Processed meats can contain added sugar or starch fillers, so check the label on sausages, deli meat and breaded items.
Protein is a target, not something to minimise. See How Much Protein.
KetoDick on this: he prefers whole fatty cuts such as chuck roast, pork shoulder and chicken thighs (video DWI8qQl5BbY). See Cheap Fatty Cuts of Meat.
Fats and oils
Pure fats and oils contain no carbs. Which ones you choose is a health and budget question, not a ketosis question. See Cooking Oils.
KetoDick on this: he says omega-3s, grass-fed butter and MCT oil have research behind them but are not needed for ketosis (video ffwBPoKxlDI), and that vegetable and canola oils are acceptable if that is what you can afford: "you can be keto at Walmart" (from the video; video DWI8qQl5BbY). See Keto on a Budget.
Dairy, nuts and fruit
These are the foods where portion size matters most.
| Food | Why it needs measuring |
|---|---|
| Milk | Contains milk sugar (lactose); cream has much less per spoonful |
| Hard cheese | Low in carbs, but easy to overeat in calories |
| Nuts and seeds | Low per nut, high per handful |
| Berries | Fit in small portions |
| Other fruit | A single piece can use much of a day's carbs |
None of these is required to be cut out. Dairy-free and nut-free versions of keto are personal choices, not ketosis rules. See Is Dairy Keto? and Do Nuts Kick You Out of Ketosis?.
KetoDick on this: for coffee he suggests diluting heavy cream with water in place of milk (video xyEZL0HuejI). He points out that an ounce of food cannot carry more than 28 g of carbs, so a few chips at a party are fine (same video).
Watch for hidden carbs
The foods most likely to surprise you are not the obvious sweets. They are:
- Sauces and dressings, including pasta sauce and ketchup
- Processed "keto" products, where fibre and sugar-alcohol labelling can make net carbs hard to trust
- Thickeners and fillers, such as maltodextrin, a starch-based additive that raises blood sugar quickly
- Coatings and breading on meat and fish
See Hidden Carbs, Sugar Alcohols, Net vs Total Carbs and Keto-Labeled Products.
KetoDick on this: he names maltodextrin as a hidden bulking agent with a high glycemic index, and uses the example of a bar with 30 g of carbs and 20 g of fibre that could count anywhere from 10 to 30 g depending on the fibre and sweeteners (video ffwBPoKxlDI). He mentions hidden carbs in nuts and pasta sauces in his lazy keto video (video LbPnm9T0oxc).
Building a day
A simple template that fits most carb limits:
- Pick a protein for each meal: eggs, chicken, fish, beef or pork.
- Add one or two non-starchy vegetables to lunch and dinner, cooked in fat or with a fatty dressing.
- Add fat to taste until the meal is filling.
- Use measured extras like cheese, nuts or berries as a side, not a base.
- Log carbs for the first few weeks so you learn where they come from. See Tracking.
